I first came across the idea of combining a RAT and a Big Muff upon learning of the Drunk Beaver Pedals Disambiguation: The body consists of a mish-mash of a RAT and a Big Muff. Playing off that idea, I designed a pedal with the input stage of the RAT followed by the clipping section of the Big Muff. The initial design was heavy. In many ways “doomy,” and in many other ways, compressed and gated. However, I found the tone to be far too niche for any commercial application. I let the idea gestate for a few months before happening upon various online discussions about using the HM2’s EQ section as the tone stack in various drives. As luck would have it, Drunk Beaver has implemented a similar idea before.
I wish I could say that I invested time and calculation to put together this design, but in the end, I just copy and pasted schematics that I found online and used ElectroSmash to identify the key parts of the RAT and Big Muff. I have managed to get this pedal to work…but I have never managed to make it sound viable.
